MEDICAL & NURSING STUDENTS
From time to time medical or nursing students are attached to the practice for us to provide them with first-hand experience of general practice. Part of this experience is best gained by 'sitting in' with a qualified Doctor or Nurse during consultations. You will always be asked for your permission to have a student sitting in and you always have the right to decline this if you wish.
For training purposes the practice does have dual head sets. The headsets are used to allow any trainee to be able to listen to telephone calls to further their experience. The person supervising the trainee would advise you if a trainee was listening in on the telephone conversation. Again you have the right to decline this if you wish.
The Practice is happy to use Language Line for patients where English is not their first language. We are also happy to work with sign language interpreters where needed.
Kincorth & Cove Bay receptions now have supplies of hearing aid batteries. Please contact reception if you require replacement batteries for your hearing aid.
The practice is pleased to announce that Lisa Gordon, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, joins us some days now to help with offering on the day appointments and are doing clinics at both our Kincorth & Cove surgeries. Lisa is able to deal with acute conditions such as chest infections, ear and throat conditions and is able to issue prescriptions where clinically indicated.
The receptionists will book you an appointment with Lisa if they feel it is appropriate. Janet is not able to treat pregnant women or mental health conditions.
On behalf of the Health and Transport Action Plan partners we would like to makeyou aware of THInC (Transport to Healthcare Information Centre). THInC canhelp patients by providing practical transport advice for people whohave difficulty getting to and from medical appointments in Grampian.The service provides a dedicated telephone service offering guidance onaccessing suitable transport options to get to and from appointments whenthey have no means of personal transport. The centre can provide details ofsuitable bus or train times, contact telephone numbers and other servicessuch as local dial-a-bus or voluntary car schemes.Please note that THInC does not book transport but can assist with traveladvice.The centre is the first of its kind in the UK and is a joint initiativebetween Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council, Moray Council, NHSGrampian, The Scottish Ambulance Service and Nestrans. All our Doctors are trained to give confidential advice on contraception. In addition, Dr Mackenzie also advises on and fits coils (IUCD). Dr Macfarlane and Dr Batalla also advise on implants. If you have any queries, please ask at reception. If you are thinking about having a baby, we recommend that you see a Doctor first for some advice and basic health checks.
All women between the ages of 20 and 60 years (except those who have undergone a hysterectomy) are invited to attend for a cervical smear every three years. Please make an appointment with one of the Practice Nurses. Please tell the receptionist your appointment is for a smear.
From 6th June 2016, the age range will change for cervical screening and will now be for women who are 25 to 64 years of age. The frequency of cervical screening will continue to be every three years from age 25 to 49, but will change to every five years for women who are 50 to 64 years of age.
If you require an examination and wish a chaperone be present, please ask the person that you are consulting with and this will be arranged. If this is not possible for some reason, your appointment will be rescheduled to allow a chaperone to be available.
Various minor surgical procedures such as the removal of benign moles, cysts and ingrowing toenails can be undertaken at the surgery under local anaesthetic. These are done by Dr Henderson & Dr Chin. Please make a routine appointment for a GP to assess your problem and, if it is suitable, a minor operation appointment will be made for you. More difficult procedures will be referred to the hospital surgeons.
By immunising your child you are not only protecting them from serious illnesses but also helping to limit the spread of these infections within the community. Our practice nurses do all our childhood immunisations from birth.
The first surveillance check is carried out at six weeks of age by several of our Doctors. You should receive an invitation for these clinics when your baby is first registered with the practice at birth. Please contact Heidi Durno on the usual surgery numbers if you are unsure of your appointment. Subsequent checks at eight months and onwards are performed by the health visitors. PATIENT SELF-REFERRAL TO OUT-PATIENT PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICE IN ABERDEEN
In June 2011, patient self-referral to the out-patient physiotherapy clinics in Aberdeen was introduced for patients with musculoskeletal problems (including continence and other pelvic dysfunction) This means that patients over the age of 16 are able to refer themselves directly to physiotherapy without having to see their GP first. Please ask at reception for a referral form and leaflet if relevant.
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you are required to complete and return one of our travel questionnaires (see questionnaire attached below). The questionnaire will ask questions about what countries and areas within countries that you will be visiting as this will determine what vaccinations are required. Once you have completed the travel questionnaire you should return it to the practice and the receptionist will allocate you a travel telephone appointment on a Monday. The travel nurse will telephone you between 5pm - 6pm on the Monday of your telephone travel appointment to discuss what/if any travel vaccinations are recommended.
If vaccinations are required the travel nurse will then book the travel vaccination administration appointments for you. It is important that you give us at least 8 weeks notice before you travel to allow time for a travel telephone appointment as they can get booked up and then time for the practice nurse to actually administer the vaccinations. These vaccinations have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your vaccine administration appointment needs to be at least 4 weeks prior to travel for it to take effect.

PRIVATE MEDICALS (EMPLOYMENT, INSURANCE ETC)
Dr Janice Chin can undertake medical examinations on your behalf and complete the necessary paperwork, for example for employers or insurance companies. There is a charge for this service. If you would like to arrange a private medical you should call the practice and ask to speak to our Secretary. The Secretary will check and advise what the cost for the medical is - payment must be made before an appointment for the medical will be arranged. Once payment has been received an appointment date and time will be issued by the Secretary. Please note that if you fail to attend the medical appointment and do not give us at least 48 hours notice that you are unable to attend no refund will be given. If 48 hours notice or more is give a 50% refund will be given.
The law says you may self certify your illness for seven days before any need for an official Department of Health sick note. Your employer should provide you with a self certification (SC2) so that you can declare your illness (legally you do not need this for the first three days of your illness). If your illness continues for more than seven days, under the NHS your GP can issue an official Department of Health statement (called the Fit Note) as a statement of your illness.
Please note, if you require a sick note for an illness of fewer than seven days' duration, a private doctor's statement may be requested. The fee for this statement is £18.00, which is a set BMA Rate, to be met by the patient or the employer.
The practice does not provide these services. Patients should consult with their occupational health provider for assistance.
